Walter C. Hornik, Jr., 70, of Wausau, passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer, on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born in Wausau to Walter and Esther (Williams) Hornik, Sr. on January 1, 1945.
Walter will be remembered for his love of family and music. He was the owner of Walt's Record Land in Stevens Point, worked at Northern Mattress as the credit manager, was the business manager for his martial arts studio, and most recently was a skip tracer for Value Finance in Schofield.
Music was a big part of Walter's life. He started his first band at age 14 called the Monarchs and he was a member, later in life, of the Musikats and Tequila Sunrise. He was the past-president of the Musicians Union in Wausau and also played piano, keyboard, accordion, Cord-o-vox, alto and tenor saxophone, and bass guitar. He also enjoyed gardening, was a member of the Newman Alumni Club, the 1963 class reunion committee, and the restoration committee for the Rothschild Pavilion.
Survivors include his children, Lisa Churkey, Walter "Bud" Hornik III, Bonnie Pedersen, Natalie (Jason) Bradshaw, all of Kronenwetter, and Cody (Amanda) Hornik of Mosinee; brother, Dennis Hornik of Green Bay; sisters, Marlene Patton of Wausau and Rose (Greg) Tryba of Wittenberg; grandchildren, Tara (Mike) Ott, Corey Ott, Christopher, Bobbie, Joshua, Angela, Gary Jr., and Aaron (Trista) Churkey, Destiny, Kegan, and Ava Hornik, Preston, Khiana, and Landon Bradshaw, and Avery and Ember Hornik; great-grandchildren, Addison, Ariana, and Cayden Ott, Owen Ott, and Gabe and Ari Churkey; nieces and nephews, Nicole, Melissa, Tyler, Taylor, Travis, and Jessica; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter, Sr. and Esther; brother, Randy; and sister, Lorraine.
A funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, with Rev. Matthew Marshall of St. Anne Parish officiating. Family and friends may call beginning at 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at the funeral home and again beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday until the time of service.
