Werner R. Weiss was born March 13th 1925, the son of the late Reinhold and Tilly (Brose) Weiss, in Merrill. He grew up in the town of Maine, graduated from Merrill High School in 1943, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Werner proudly served his country during World War II, on the USS Memphis. He met Elvera Plautz at a dance in Little Chicago and on September 2nd 1950, they were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. They shared 50 years of marriage, prior to Elvera's death in November 2000.
He began his career at the Weyerhaeuser Paper Mill, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. Not one to sit still, Werner then worked part-time with his son, Steve, at Thrall Distribution. After Elvera's death, Werner moved to Forest Park Village, where he enjoyed his time and the people there. For the past three years, he had been a resident of Marathon Assisted Living, where they made sure he always got his extra dessert.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Burns Post No. 388, Wausau, American Legion, Montgomery Plant Post No. 10, Wausau, and D.A.V. Werner had a special sense of humor and liked to laugh, tease, and get everyone's attention with his catchy sayings or musings. Most importantly, Werner had a strong sense of faith and was dedicated to serving Trinity Lutheran Church, where he ushered for 20 years and also served on the finance committee. He cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was always ready to give them a good hug.
Werner was a fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. He always enjoyed a good game of cards, such as Sheepshead or Uno, and spending time with family and friends.
On Tuesday, June 26th 2012, Werner R. Weiss died under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice, at Marathon Assisted Living, Marathon. He was 87 years young.
He will be lovingly remembered by his two children, Steven (Kay) Weiss and Renee (Scott) Osness, all of Wausau; four grandchildren, Travis Weiss, Sun Prairie, WI, Kimberly (Nick) Burger, Melissa Osness, and Logan Osness, all of Wausau; four beloved great-grandchildren, Ella and Lauren Weiss, and Graysen and Gretchen Burger; sister-in-law, Evelyn Plautz; brother-in-law, Orv Utech; and other family and friends. Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Viola, Roland, and Alvin Weiss.
A celebration of Werner's life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 2nd, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Reverend Gary Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park with full military honors by the V.F.W. Burns Post No. 388, Wausau. Family will receive guests from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Sunday, July 1st, at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau; and again Monday, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at the church.
A special 'thank you' to everyone at Forest Park Villiage, Marathon Assisted Living, and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice for the extraordinary care provided to Werner over the years.
