Winifred Hammond, 83, died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
Winifred D. Hammond was born August 4, 1925 in Wausau to the late Clyde and Melissa (Perkins) Hammond. She grew up and lived nearly her entire life in Brokaw and graduated from Wausau High School. She worked for Wausau Paper in Brokaw as a Paper Sorter in the Finishing Room for over thirty years.
Winifred was born with a physical disability, but that never stopped her from being a fiercely independent person who never looked for pity. Her inner strength and desire for her own independence was an example for others to live by. Though she was never married, to all of her nieces and nephews “Aunt Winnie” was a loving second mother. Family and friends were always welcome at Aunt Winnie’s house. She would bake many wonderful treats, two of her specialties were her fruit cake and Schaum Tortes. In her free time, Winifred enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, watching movies and listening to all kinds of music.
Winifred is survived by her nieces and nephews, Wayne (Mary) Hammond, Gary (Mary) Hammond, Sandra (Kelly) Knutson, Larry (Gloria) Hammond, Bruce Valentine, Scott Valentine, James Hammond, and Jon Hammond and other extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Melissa (Perkins) Hammond; brothers, Donald, Leslie, Glen, Melvin, and Russell; sister, Wanda; three siblings who died in infancy; nephew, David Hammond; and niece Rosemary “Rosie” Jensen.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Pastor Tim Vanden Langenberg will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at the Helke Funeral Home and conclude at the time of services at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow the funeral service at Restlawn Memorial Park.
